The original poem “Do not stand…”
Thanks to some people who wrote in, I have discovered the poet who wrote the poem that begins with the line above. It’s Mary Frye, and notice that the line at the start is ‘Do not stand’ rather than ‘Stand not at’. I don’t know how this got changed. Now I know why I couldn’t find anything much about it on line. Here’s the original version:
(do not stand at my grave and weep)
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
